This work presents a brief history of the art of cartomancy as an evolution from prehistoric systems for divination of the earliest forms of alphabet in written history. The concept of the “tarot trumps” as symbols attuned to the 22 letters of the old Hebrew alphabet is explored as relating the “magic images” of these letters to certain uni-literal Egyptian hieroglyphs. The relationship of tarot to other ancient gaming systems, such as the Sumerian “Game of Ur,” Egyptian “Senet” and “Hounds and Jackals” as well as to the Scandinavian game “Daldos” are also examined. Comparisons are then able to be made between the modern tarot trumps and the original “alphabet of the gods,” here reverseengineered from them.
